Scars can result from trauma, burns, infections and previous surgeries, and may cause emotional pain and low self-esteem. Common scar formations include keloids, hypertrophic scars and contractures. Scar revision procedures will not eliminate scars completely but they can certainly make them less visible. Appearance is a common reason for someone seeking a scar revision procedure especially when the scar is located on the face. Other scars can actually cause functional problems, such as those that cross a joint and restrict movement. The options for scar revision vary greatly and Dr. Parva, in Leesburg, Virginia will do a thorough exam and discuss which options are available to you. Skin color changes or shallow scars may respond well to lasers, dermabrasion or chemical peels. Other scars may require surgery to reduce their appearance or correct a functional restriction caused by the scar tissue.
“Dear Dr. Parva and staff -
Thank you so much not only for the excellent care, but for the caring way you do it. You have changed our lives forever.”
What is Scar Revision Surgery?
Revising scars is precisely that – revising, not eliminating. Plastic surgery does not erase scars. In fact, any injury to the skin leaves a scar because of our natural healing process. However, a full evaluation of the scar tissue, its appearance and effects can lead to thoughtful planning for treatments and procedures that can reduce their appearance.
Advanced surgical techniques may be indicated to remove large scars. Reorienting scars or changing their direction is a valuable tool to reduce the appearance of some scars.
Who is a Good Candidate?
- Dissatisfaction with the appearance of scars
- Skin discoloration
- Skin Irregularities
- Limited function from a tight scar contracture
- Disfigurement from a scar
- Non-smoker
- Realistic goals and expectations
The Scar Revision Procedures:
Dr. Parva, board certified plastic surgeon, will evaluate the location, extent and effects of the scar tissue. He will then discuss the options with you. Dr. Parva emphasizes the limitations of scar revision as well, so your expectations are realistic and obtainable.
Scars primarily resulting in color changes to the skin can be treated with IPL (Phototherapy). Similar shallow scars or skin irregularity can be treated with chemical peels, dermabrasion or Laser resurfacing.
Surgical approaches come into play when there are more extensive scars. The most direct approach to a linear scar is to remove it and close it again in a controlled manner to leave a finer scar. Reorienting the direction of scars, including Z-plasty, is another technique that results in a more concealed scar or one that does not attract as much attention. For example, a scar on the forehead that runs up and down draws attention, whereas orienting it horizontally so it is in line with natural skin creases will disguise its appearance.
Recovery and Healing:
- Elevation of the surgical site
- Ice or cool compresses
- No heavy lifting or strenuous activity for 2 weeks
- Limited activities
- Use of silicone sheets and compression can help control the scar as it heals
Results:
Swelling and bruising is typical for the first several weeks.
Results are immediate but it may take several months to see the full benefits.
Poor scars may develop, particularly if keloid scars were present.
Further scar revisions may be indicated.
