Surgical Tattoo Removal

Getting a tattoo may have seemed like a good idea at the time but many people later regret getting them.   In later years, tattoos may become a source of embarrassment as someone tries to find employment, begin a new relationship or matures.  Tattoos are created by depositing permanent pigment into the depth of the skin. If time comes to remove the tattoo, lasers are the most common method. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment causing it to break apart into smaller particles. This assists the body in clearing the pigment. Multiple treatments are needed to fade the tattoo. At Parva Plastic Surgery in Northern Virginia, we do not provide laser treatment for tattoo removal.   However another option is surgical removal of the unwanted tattoo.  Small tattoos in discrete areas may be well suited for this option.  Dr. Parva will be happy to evaluate the area for removal to see if you are a candidate for surgical removal.

What is Surgical Removal of Tattoos?

Small tattoos may be removed by directly excising the tattoo and closing the area. The result is a linear scar. For larger tattoos, removal of the tattoo can leave a large area that cannot easily be closed in a line. A skin graft is an option to cover the area.

Who is a Good Candidate?

  • A desire to remove a tattoo surgically, rather than multiple laser treatments
  • Non-smoker
  • Realistic goals and expectations

“I couldn’t have asked for a surgeon with more compassion and genuine concern for their patients.”

The Tattoo Removal Procedure:

As in removal of any skin lesion, the area is infiltrated with Lidocaine to numb the skin. An incision is made around the tattoo and it is removed. The skin is closed and a dressing is applied.

When a skin graft is used, a thin layer of skin is harvested from another area of the body and placed over the wound created after removing the tattoo. A special dressing is placed to protect the graft for 5 to 7 days.

Recovery and Healing:

  • Elevation of the surgical site
  • No heavy lifting or strenuous activity for 2 weeks
  • Limited activities for one week

Results:

Results are immediate but it may take several months to see the full benefits.

A scar will result and will take time to fade.
