Breast Reconstruction
Patient 1
This active, healthy 50 year-old mother of three was found to have a right breast mass. On further evaluation, she in fact had breast cancer involving both breasts. She had bilateral skin and areola-sparing mastectomies and 2-stage breast reconstruction. She had 550cc Moderate Plus Profile silicone gel implants and is seen 9 months after the second stage reconstruction. She decided not to have a nipple reconstruction.
Patient 2
This young woman was diagnosed with right breast cancer at the age of 57. She had a mastectomy at that time, deciding not to have breast reconstruction. One year later she began her delayed breast reconstruction by having a tissue expander placed. The left breast was reduced for symmetry and to relieve her of the significant imbalance in upper body weight distribution. Five months later, the right breast tissue expander was replaced with a 750cc saline implant.
Patient 3
This young 48 year-old was diagnosed with left breast cancer. She has breast changes on the right side as well and a sister with breast cancer so she decided to have bilateral skin-sparing mastectomies and reconstruction with implants. She is seen 6 months after her 2-stage breast reconstruction with expanders, followed by 800cc high profile silicone gel implants. She has decided not to have nipple reconstruction.
Patient 4
At the age of 46, this young woman found a mass in her right breast that was found to be breast cancer. She decided to have a mastectomy and chose the TRAM flap reconstruction. She later had a left breast lift for improved symmetry. She is seen 18 months after the procedure. She has decided not to have nipple reconstruction at this time.
Patient 5
This 52 year-old young woman was diagnosed with left breast cancer and had a long history of painful fibrocystic disease. She decided to have bilateral skin-sparing mastectomies and a 2-stage expander/implant reconstruction. She is seen over 3 years after reconstruction with 550cc high profile silicone gel implants. She elected not to have nipple reconstruction.
Patient 6
At 42 years of age, this mother of 4 found a mass in her left breast. Additionally, because of a family history of breast cancer, she decided to have bilateral skin-sparing mastectomies and 2-stage expander/implant reconstruction. She is seen 5 years after 600cc high profile silicone gel implants and nipple reconstruction.
Patient 7
This is a 44 year-old woman with atypical changes in the left breast and a strong family history of breast cancer. She had bilateral skin-sparing mastectomies with tissue expander placement. Five months later the expanders were replaced with 500cc moderate plus profile silicone gel implants and 5 months later had bilateral nipple reconstruction.
Patient 8
This 46 year-old young woman was found to have changes in her right breast on routine mammogram. A biopsy confirmed breast cancer. She had a right mastectomy with expander reconstruction and subsequent exchange to a 575cc saline implant filled to 600cc. A left breast reduction was performed for symmetry.
Patient 9
This healthy 39 year-old mother of 2 was noted to have a suspicious left breast mass on routine breast exam by her Gynecologist. A biopsy confirmed breast cancer. She was a good candidate for a nipple-sparing mastectomy which was performed and an expander was placed at the same time. Six months later the expander was replaced with a 325cc saline implant filled to 390cc and a breast augmentation with a 200cc saline implant was performed on the right side for symmetry.
Patient 10
As a 47 year-old woman, routine mammograms were performed yearly when changes were noted in the left breast. Two separate sites of cancer were found on biopsy. She had a left mastectomy with nipple preservation and placement of a tissue expander. Five months later the expander was replaced with a high profile 800cc silicone gel implant and a right breast reduction was performed for symmetry.
Patient 11
This 48 year-old young woman found a right breast mass, confirmed to be an infiltrating ductal carcinoma. She is 5'1", 105lb and has one child. She had a right nipple-sparing mastectomy with placement of a tissue expander. Four months later the tissue expander was replaced with a high profile 375cc silicone gel implant and the left breast was augmented with a moderate profile 210cc silicone gel implant for symmetry. She is seen 2 years later.
Patient 12
This 50 year-old young woman found a mass in her left breast. A mammogram 2 years earlier was normal and at that time she had breast augmentation. The mass was confirmed to be invasive ductal carcinoma. In performing her left mastectomy, the prior implant was removed and an expander was placed. Cigarette smoking contributed to initial healing delays but one year later she completed her reconstruction with placement of a high profile 600cc silicone gel implant in the left breast. For symmetry, a right breast lift and augmentation was performed replacing her prior implant with a midrange 339cc silicone gel implant.
Patient 13
This 35 year-old young woman developed an early stage left breast cancer with a strong family history of breast cancer. Therefore, she had bilateral nipple sparing mastectomy with implant reconstruction with high profile 700 cc. silicone gel implants. The incision is hidden in her breast crease and the entire breast skin and nipple were preserved giving her a very natural breast reconstruction result.
Patient 14
This 38 year young lady, 5’9” and 149lb. had a right breast mass that was removed. The mass recurred 2 years later in the right upper breast. A lumpectomy was performed, removing a mass nearly the size of a grapefruit. Immediate reconstruction was performed rearranging the remaining breast tissue. For breast symmetry a left breast reduction was performed. The patient is seen 16 months post op and is very happy with her reconstructive outcome.
Patient 15
This 33 year young active woman, 5’4” and 128lb. has 2 children and was diagnosed with left breast cancer and proceeded with modified radical mastectomy and immediate reconstruction using a TRAM Flap followed by chemotherapy treatment. She then had a right breast lift for symmetry followed by a left breast nipple reconstruction and fat grafting about 8 months later. She is seen 5 ½ years post op and may proceed with nipple tattooing to finalize her personal reconstructive goals.
Patient 16
This 54 year young mom of two children, 5’5” and 138lb. was diagnosed with left breast cancer after a suspicious mammogram and noting some nipple discharge. She elected to undergo a mastectomy and had a two stage breast reconstruction which consisted of an immediate left breast reconstruction with tissue expander followed by an implant reconstruction with a high profile 350cc. silicone gel implant. A symmetry breast augmentation was performed on the right breast using a moderate profile 150 cc. silicone gel implant. She is seen 3 years post op after she had nipple reconstruction surgery and remains very happy with her progress.
Patient 17
This 47 year young single mom of one child, 5’4” and 128 lb. was diagnosed with right breast cancer after a mammogram noted an abnormality. She elected to have a mastectomy with a two stage breast reconstruction which involved a tissue expander being placed at the time of the mastectomy, followed by an implant reconstruction with a high profile 550cc. silicone gel implant. A left breast lift was performed at the same time to establish breast symmetry. She completed her treatment with a right nipple reconstruction. She is seen 2 years post op from her original surgery 3 months from the nipple reconstruction. She feels confident and happy with her surgical outcome and has a renewed hope for the future.
