Secondary Reconstructive Procedures

What Secondary Procedures Might I Expect?

Regardless of the type of reconstruction performed, breast reconstruction is invariably a staged process. Consider the following:

  • The opposite breast will often need a reduction, lift or augmentation to achieve symmetry with the newly reconstructed breast.
  • Revisions of the implant reconstructed breast may be needed in the future. This may include addressing contour irregularities, capsular contracture or scar tissue around the implant, rippling, implant failure, etc.
  • Flaps may require touch up procedures to improve the final shape.
  • Most women will choose to have nipple reconstruction which is commonly performed as the final component to the reconstruction.
  • Tattooing the nipple-areola adds the final touch for women who want to achieve the closest appearance of a normal breast.
